Is the Hudl the perfect budget tablet?
The Hudl flew off the shelves in the run-up to Christmas. Along with the Playstation 4 and X-Box One Tesco’s very own tablet has proven to be one of this year’s most wanted devices. Here’s what all the fuss is about...
The price tag
Right now Tesco is selling the Hudl at £119. It’s not the only tablet out there at or around the £100 mark – but it’s one of the few that’s any good. The price tag looks even more attractive when you find out you can get hold of it for just £60 if purchased with Tesco’s Clubcard loyalty card vouchers.
You don’t have to be a tech genius to use it
The Hudl runs on Android software so if you’ve got a Samsung or HTC phone the screen layout and navigation system should be pretty familiar. If not there’s no need to worry. Cnet was impressed by the fact Tesco has included some helpful walkthrough software to enable you to get to grips with it right away. It tells you all about setting up user account security and parental locks as well. You might not be able to flick from page to page with the speed of an iPad but for the price it’s hard to fault.
It offers decent display and sound
It might not be in the same league as the likes of the new iPad Mini but the Hudl nevertheless features a perfectly decent screen and speakers. It’s certainly sharp enough to watch TV and films in suitably sharp definition. As PC Pro put it “The 1440 x 900 resolution is a tier below the Nexus 7's 1920 x 1200 display but it certainly doesn't want for sharpness nor brightness or contrast”.
It’s perfect for tiny hands
The Hudl is ideal as an all-round family tablet. The 7-inch screen is surrounded by nice wide borders and a soft-touch back panel. Given that it’s about £200 cheaper than the new iPad Mini it won’t be quite as much of a blow if it takes a knock. What’s more Tesco make it easy to customise the settings with parental locks for safe browsing. It might not quite fit the bill for teenagers wanting a platform for super-slick gaming – but for the rest of the family it should do pretty much everything that’s asked of it.
